Journeying from Brisbane to Adelaide over four days and three nights, Great Southern guests are immersed in some of Australia’s most spectacular coastal and inland scenery while tucking into creative menus showcasing premium local food and wine. Guests will travel from Brisbane into northern New South Wales, regional Victoria and South Australia before the journey concludes in Adelaide.

The Great Southern - Rail Adventure

Departing Brisbane, you’ll travel south into the rolling hills of New South Wales before indulging in an incredible beachside dining experience in Coffs Harbour. Meander through the historic vineyards of the Hunter Valley, explore the beautiful Port Stephens area by land or by sea or take a walking tour around the town and coastline of Newcastle. The journey continues into regional Victoria, with time to explore the area or venture into Melbourne for a day spent exploring the city and visiting icons such as the National Gallery of Victoria. Your journey then continues into South Australia before you reach your final destination of Adelaide.

Day 1: Brisbane And Coffs Harbour

After setting off from Brisbane, enjoy lunch on board and a relaxing afternoon settling into your private cabin before arriving at the coastal town of Coffs Harbour. As the sun dips beneath the horizon, enjoy a unique beachside dinner where you’ll feast on local produce and fresh seafood matched with fine wines, while the waves lap at the shore nearby. After a few leisurely hours, you’ll reboard the train and set off for the night.

Coffs Harbour Dinner (Included In Fare)

After crossing from Queensland into northern New South Wales, enjoy a unique dining experience on the beach at the sublime coastal town of Coffs Harbour.

On arrival at Coffs Harbour Station in the early evening, you’ll be met by coaches to transport you to your dinner location just a short drive away. As the sun dips beneath the horizon, enjoy a unique beachside dinner where you’ll feast on local produce and fresh seafood matched with fine wines. After a few leisurely hours, you’ll reboard the train and set off for the night.

  • PLEASE NOTE: Guests are strongly encouraged to wear flat, comfortable shoes as the experience will be held outdoors on varying surfaces including sand, grass and some uneven walkways. In the event of poor weather, the dinner will be moved indoors.

Day 2: Hunter Valley, Newcastle Or Port Stephens

Start the day with a hearty breakfast on board before setting off for a full day of Off Train Experiences. You will get to choose your adventure with your choice of the Hunter Valley, Newcastle or Port Stephens.

Hunter Valley Wine Region: Meander through the picturesque and historic vineyards of the Hunter Valley, where you can sample wines from both world-renowned brands and boutique cellar doors. Your day will include cellar door experiences and a sumptuous lunch (low intensity).

Port Stephens by Land: Experience the impressive Stockton Bight Sand Dunes and beach by 4WD van, stopping to hunt for pipis and driving to the top of a sand dune to take in the incredible views. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed lunch before heading back to the train in the afternoon (low intensity).

Port Stephens by Sea: Enjoy the stunning views of Port Stephens with a relaxed morning of sailing on the water and the chance to spot dolphins along the way. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed lunch before heading back to the train in the afternoon (low intensity).

Newcastle Explorer: Discover the vibrant mix of old and new in the beautiful coastal city of Newcastle with a fun and informative two-hour guided walking tour before lunch. In the afternoon enjoy an hour of free time by the beach or in town (moderate intensity)

In the evening, return to the train to enjoy a regionally-inspired meal prepared on board before retiring for the night.

1. Hunter Valley Wine Region (Included In Fare)

Known for superior semillon and shiraz, the Hunter Valley is around 50 km inland from the New South Wales coast. After breakfast on board, you’ll disembark and spend the day visiting cellar doors in Australia’s oldest wine region.

From The Historic Maitland Station (1880), you’ll take a relaxing coach ride into this fertile valley, home to around 150 wineries ranging from slick big-name producers to small-scale boutique bottlers.

Your day amongst the vines will take you to some of the region’s finest wineries, from stylish and contemporary to marvellously historic, and relaxed and fun. Generous tasting times will allow you to savour the full range of Hunter Valley offerings. In between wine tastings, you’ll also sit down for a platter-style lunch.

Suitably wined and dined, you’ll return to the coach to make the leisurely journey to Broadmeadow Station, meeting the Great Southern to continue your journey southwards.

2. Port Stephens By Land (Included In Fare)

Port Stephens’ sun-soaked beaches, dunes and beautiful waterways are essential east coast highlights.

After breakfast on board, the Great Southern pulls into old-time Maitland Station, where it’s a relaxed one-hour coach ride to Anna Bay, home to the impressive Stockton Sand Dunes.

Soaring to an improbable 30m high and 1km wide in some places, these colossal sand hills are the largest mobile dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. A guided 4WD excursion is the best way to experience the beaches and dunes. After the 4WD tour, you’ll be coached to lunch to savour fresh local produce.

Back on the coach, it’s a short drive back to meet the Great Southern at Broadmeadow Station.

  • Recommended Fitness Level: Low to moderate – the 4WD tour can be bumpy and may not be suitable for people with some injuries or mobility restrictions.

3. Port Stephens By Sea (Included In Fare)

Port Stephens is a natural world stage, encompassing beautiful beaches, stunning sand dunes and clear waterways a true highlight of the east coast.

After breakfast on board, the Great Southern pulls into old-time Maitland Station, from where it’s a relaxed one-hour coach ride to the marina at Nelson Bay, just east of Port Stephens. Here you’ll enjoy a relaxed cruise on the Bay, spotting playful bottlenose dolphins in their glorious natural habitat.

Following a pleasant morning on board the 78ft catamaran, you will be coached to lunch to savour fresh local produce.

Back on the coach, it’s a short drive back to meet the Great Southern at Broadmeadow Station.

  • Recommended Fitness Level: Low – the sailing vessel has steep steps to board and access the top deck, with two unisex bathrooms located onboard.
  • PLEASE NOTE: It is recommended guests bring non-slip, flat shoes (no high heels permitted), a hat, sunscreen, water, a wind jacket, and warm clothes pending weather. The vessel is not wheelchair accessible.

4. Newcastle Explorer (Included In Fare)

Newcastle is a city on the rise, where creative energy and heritage architecture collide with surf beaches and a hard-edged industrial legacy. Take a day to discover the many charms of Australia’s third-oldest city.

After breakfast on board, the train will pull into Maitland Station, from where you’ll travel by coach to Queens Wharf on the waterfront in ‘New’. There’s enough here to keep you busy all day: an observation tower, marina, ferry dock, cafes, restaurants, pub, brewery… But an easy-going two-hour Newcastle Afoot walking tour will give you a broader sense of the city, finishing with lunch with a view.

In the afternoon, choose between an hour of free time to explore the city or relaxing by the beach.

Back on the coach, you’ll transfer to Broadmeadow Station, where you’ll reboard the Great Southern.

  • Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate – the experience includes a 1.5-hour walking tour. The pace can be altered to accommodate most abilities however guests should consider their fitness levels in relation to the length of time they will be on their feet.

5. Hunter Valley Helicopter Experience (New Experience) Optional Upgrade - $180 Per Person (Limited Availability)

Tailor-made for Great Southern guests, this is an opportunity to witness all the Hunter Valley has to offer.

Enjoy wine tasting at award-winning Brokenwood Wines, before being transferred to Twine Restaurant, soaking in the stunning views of Hunter Valley. While you are waiting to board your helicopter experience, savour boutique Hunter Valley wines paired with chocolate from a local producer.

The Hunter Valley helicopter flight showcases the best of the wine region and beyond. See the myriad vines, rolling green hills, and the changing soil that make the Hunter Valley unique. Highlights along the way include the Hunter Valley Gardens, Broken Back Range, and more. Gliding over the Broken Back Range, you’ll admire Pokolbin State Forest and the surrounding valleys. Bring your camera and get some great shots as the landscape shifts from vineyards to the ridgeline to the bush. Your pilot will tell you about the history of the area and point out some features along the way.

Back on the coach, you’ll transfer to Broadmeadow Station, where you’ll reboard the Great Southern.

Day 3: Regional Victoria Or Melbourne

After enjoying breakfast on board as you travel through Victoria’s high country, you’ll have a choice of Off Train Experiences. Discover regional Victoria with options including wine touring and gourmet delights, visits to natural sights and charming towns. Or opt to visit cosmopolitan Melbourne and take in the soaring views from Melbourne Skydeck or enjoy free time to explore the city yourself.

1. National Gallery Of Victoria (Included In Fare)

Explore the oldest and most visited art collection in Australia at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Enjoy a private tour with a knowledgeable NGV Guide, showcasing collections from a range of international and local artists, exhibitions, programs and events, from contemporary art to major international historic exhibitions, fashion and design, architecture, sound and dance.

Finish the tour on the banks of the Yarra River at Melbourne Skydeck, the Southern Hemisphere’s highest public observation tower. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is not only an iconic sporting institution but also an impressive landmark solidified in Melbourne’s skyline. On this Off Train Experience, guests will take a tour of the MCG with the insight and knowledge of a Melbourne Cricket Club member. Be regaled with the highs and lows of sporting history and take away some useful trivia for your next quiz night.

Having worked up an appetite, transfer to Eureka 89 for lunch. Eureka 89 is within Eureka Tower on Melbourne’s South Bank, which is also home to the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest public observation deck. Here, you’ll dine on a crafted menu showcasing local and seasonal produce while taking in the views of Melbourne and beyond. After lunch, you’ll make your way back to the train to continue your journey south.

Head to the Old Melbourne Gaol, which from 1842 until its closure in 1929 was the scene of 133 hangings, including Australia’s most infamous citizen, Bushranger Ned Kelly. Having worked up an appetite, transfer to Eureka 89 for lunch. Victoria is well-known for its excellent food and wine scene and this is certainly on display at Clyde Park in the Moorabool Valley. A little over an hour from Melbourne, Clyde Park is a beautiful vineyard, cellar door and bistro set among rolling hills. Here, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous lunch and cool climate wines while being entertained on the glorious lawns.

A short 15-minute coach ride back to Inverleigh Station will see you rejoin with fellow guests, boarding the train in time for a delectable dinner while en route to Adelaide.

The Great Southern departs from and arrives at this station.

Address: Hanworth House, 109 Lytton Rd, East Brisbane for check-in from 7.00 am to 8.45 am.

Please note check-in closes at 8.45 am after which complimentary coach transfers will depart from Hanworth House for the Rail Terminal. The first coaches will leave at 9.15 am

ADELAIDE PARKLANDS TERMINAL

The Ghan, Indian Pacific, Great Southern and Overland depart from and arrive at this terminal.

The East Perth Terminal is open daily as it services regional coach and train services but our staff are only available on train arrival and departure days (Saturdays and Sundays).

Things to Note

  • All per-person prices quoted are in Australian dollars
  • During peak seasons, weekends, and student holidays, spots for tours and accommodation on trains are likely to be fully booked. In the event of full occupancy, alternatives or upgraded room types may be provided with appropriate refunds or additional charges. Our company reserves the right to adjust prices for accommodation on trains before issuing tickets, depending on the season and occupancy rate. If the price exceeds the original selling price, you can choose to accept the new price or receive a refund. Once tickets are issued, changes to the itinerary cannot be made.
  • A booking is confirmed (and a contract between you and us comes into effect) when:
    • You have made a Booking and have provided us with all necessary information to process your request;
    • You have paid us the amount (and any other amounts payable at the time of making the Booking) in accordance with these Booking Conditions; and
    • We have sent you a Booking Confirmation.
  • We commence providing services to you as soon as we confirm your booking. This includes (often significant) work undertaken before travel to arrange and coordinate the delivery of
    your Journey. You also receive the benefit of work we undertake in anticipation of bookings.
  • If we cancel your Journey for reasons other than Force Majeure (see below), you will be offered (at your election) a refund of all funds received, the offer of an alternative Journey of comparable quality if appropriate or a Credit Note. If we cancelled a Rail Journey aboard The Overland due to either the Victorian or South Australian State Government’s decision
    to cease funding for The Overland, then we will provide you with a refund of all funds paid.
  • To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be responsible for any other loss or costs you incur (for example, airfares not included in your Journey, insurance and visa expenses)
    if your Journey or particular Journey Services are cancelled for any reason.
  • Due to the dynamic nature of the travel industry, we may occasionally need to make amendments or modifications to the itinerary of your Journey and its inclusions (including Off Train Excursions) and you acknowledge our right to do this. Most changes will not be significant. If we become aware of any significant changes to your Journey’s itinerary or its inclusions that materially detract from the overall characteristics or value of the Journey (where we determine it can still proceed), then we will notify you within a reasonable time and you may elect to:
    • proceed with the Journey, in which case we will refund you an amount attributable to the reduction in value determined by us acting reasonably; or
    • cancel your Journey, in which case we will refund the Journey Price received by us at that time.
  • It is strongly encouraged that you are adequately insured for the duration of your Journey. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance to cover cancellation, medical requirements, medical evacuation, luggage and additional expenses. The choice of insurer is yours. We strongly suggest you purchase insurance at the time you pay your Deposit.
    This is because cancellation fees may be payable from that time.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a suitable level of health and fitness to undertake the Journey. For all Rail Journeys (other than The Overland, where we will make requests only in particular circumstances), you must complete our Fitness to Travel Form accessible here (https://www.journeybeyondrail.com.au/terms-conditions/) within a
    reasonable time after we issue your Booking Confirmation and in any event before travel.
  • We may cancel your booking or refuse to board you without any right of refund if you fail to complete the Fitness to Travel Form within a reasonable time after we have reminded
    you to do so.
  • Special dietary requests are required to be notified to us within 7 days after we issue your Booking Confirmation.
  • Check-in: You must check in with our representative at the location stated on your Final Travel Documents within the following timeframes:
    • for The Ghan, Indian Pacific and Great Southern: no more than 2.5 hours and no later than 1 hour before the scheduled departure; and
    • for the Overland, no more than one hour and no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled departure.
    • You must show suitable photo identification to the representative when checking in
  • All Journey Beyond Rail trains are entirely smoke-free in accordance with relevant state government regulations. You must not smoke (including e-cigarettes) on the train.
  • No refunds will be made for any Journey Services not utilised, whether by choice or because of late arrival or early departure. This includes the failure of commercial transport to operate according to schedule, which we disclaim responsibility for. This does not apply if the reason for your late arrival or early departure was due to our negligence.
  • We and our suppliers may take photographs or make recordings of you and your activities that identify you during the Journey. We reserve the right to use any images and/
    or recordings for promotional and marketing purposes. You consent to this use and acknowledge you will not be entitled to any payment or other compensation. If you do not
    consent to the use of your image or likeness, please advise us at least 21 days before the commencement of your Journey.

If your order only pays the deposit of a product: a, if the product has available seats on the departure date and price and contents are the same as the order you placed, the booking would be confirmed by us without additional notification to you, and the deposit is not refundable. b, if the product has no available seats or price or contents are not the same, we might provide alternative options.
