Best Kakadu Tours from Darwin Highlights

*This itinerary is subject to change due to seasonal access permitting us from entering certain areas pre and post-dry season. Please note that the falls are rarely open before late June. Highlights are a guideline only. Kakadu’s diverse landscape and weather conditions mean a high amount of change and flexibility in the itinerary is expected. Your expert guides will ensure that all have the most amazing adventure of all!

Itinerary

Day 1: Darwin to Kakadu

Start your adventure with a small group by departing from Darwin and head out to the Wetlands Region, where the magnificent scenery of the top ends starts to be on show. Along the way, we have ample opportunity to spot a huge range of top-end birdlife, not to mention some fresh and salty apex predators… crocodiles!

We journey on to Kakadu National Park, where our home for the next two nights in Jabiru awaits. The Bowali Visitor Centre offers a beautiful introduction to the Park’s landscape and wildlife, and we take time to soak it in before checking into our local accommodation. After some relaxation we journey north to Cahills Crossing on the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Here, we embark on a cultural tour of a lifetime – cruising down the East Alligator River on the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land to experience the dreamtime stories of the area and majestic birdlife and, of course, hope to see crocodiles along where they and the locals aim to catch some barramundi! We will visit one of the best-preserved collections of Aboriginal Rock Art in the world at Ubirrrock at sunset. This incredibly significant site showcases many styles of Rock Art and allows us to climb up high for a sunset that will blow you away, looking out over the Nadab Floodplain. We head home back to Jabiru for dinner and a comfortable night’s accommodation.

Jim Jim is probably the most famous and stunning location within Kakadu. Depending on seasonal factors and cultural observations, we will visit one of these amazing waterfalls situated at the bottom of an adventurous 4WD road. Please be aware that access to the falls is seasonal, with conditions permitting, and at least a moderate to high level of fitness and agility is required to undertake this walk. We hike out to the huge plunge pool and the accompanying beach area, where you can enjoy plenty of time to cool off surrounded by thick monsoon forest framed by magnificent rock escarpments. We head back home with an opportunity to stop at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where you have time to delve into the culture of Kakadu and gain deeper insight into the stories, flora and fauna of this World Heritage-listed national Park.

Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock features incredible Aboriginal Rock Art and dreamtime stories of the Bininj people. Another 4WD track awaits us as we travel south and enjoy a picnic lunch at the plunge pool of Barramundi Gorge (Maguk) Waterfall, one of the most picturesque and pristine waterfalls in Kakadu. Please note that at least a moderate level of fitness and agility is required here, with flat pathways combining with rocky crossings leading you to the plunge pool through the monsoon forest. After our 2km walk, swim and lunch, we head to Nitmiluk National Park before heading into tonight’s accommodation in Katherine to relax and enjoy the local hospitality.

We will then be making our way towards the beautiful Edith Falls for further relaxation in picture-perfect Top End surroundings with a picnic lunch, clear water, and a welcome chance to cool off!
